So, as I was saying yesterday, you had a fantastic meeting with a prospect and they are interested in working with you. What to do next?
Here's what I do:
- Send a thank you note: Yes, I said a note. I admit I do send follow-up emails to prospective clients, but I also follow-up with a handwritten note. It's so much more human.
- Review your notes: There is usually a lot of information exchanged in a first meeting. I like to go over everything while it’s still fresh in my mind.
- Promptly send requested materials: If they have requested a proposal, estimate or samples, send it in a timely manner.
- Follow up: If you haven’t heard back immediately, follow up via email or phone.
A good thing to remember: silence is not a sign of disinterest.
People’s schedules are busy. You may not hear back for a few days. Or a few weeks. It doesn’t mean they don’t want to work with you.
If you have sent an estimate or proposal, however, it’s a good idea to follow-up after a few days—both to confirm receipt of the materials and to ease your mind (admit it, you feel anxious if you don’t hear back).
